The novel begins with Ryan and his family vacationing in London. While there, they witness an IRA terrorist attack on a British government official. Ryan's instincts kick in and he intervenes, saving the official's life. This act of heroism makes Ryan a target of the IRA, which vows to seek revenge.
Back in the United States, Ryan is assigned to protect a visiting Northern Irish politician who is a target of the IRA. When the politician is assassinated, Ryan becomes the prime suspect. He must clear his name and track down the real killer before the IRA can strike again.

The other characters in the novel are equally well-developed. Ryan's wife, Cathy, is a strong and supportive woman who is always there for her husband. Ryan's friend and colleague, Admiral James Greer, is a wise and experienced mentor who helps Ryan navigate the treacherous world of espionage.
The Setting
The novel is set in a variety of locations, including London, Belfast, and the United States. Clancy paints a vivid picture of each setting, and he uses the locations to explore the themes of the novel.
London is a city of contrasts, with its grand architecture and its hidden underworld of crime and violence. Belfast is a city torn apart by sectarian conflict, and it is here that Ryan's battle with the IRA reaches its climax.
